Post-Graduate Life

...blows. For me at least. I don't know how all of the rest of you guys have been fairing since you have left your alma maters, but personally, I can't seem to get my shit together for the life of me. I guess I did go overseas for 4 months, then move out here without a job, a plan, hardly any money, any friends or a decent place to live, but still, I thought things would be going a lot better than they are almost a year after.

I am not using my degrees at the moment, and I don't really plan to either. I really have no idea what i'm doing at this point in my life at all, all I do know is that I refuse to settle for some post-graduate sales or finance job that everyone else seems to do which, while I feel a lot better about myself not selling out to a mundane, normal life, it's taking quite the hit on my bank account and living standards.

I consider myself very intelligent, a hard worker, I hardly ever drink or slack off, I have two degrees and am working 3 jobs, except getting laid off from one at the moment due to cutbacks. I switch jobs like every couple months, I can't seem to find anything I like.


Anyone else having this kind of experience? If not, seriously congratulations I envy you, but for me personally post-graduate life is not what I always thought it would be....I think I could get on track if I would just take some white collar finance or sales job or whatever, but i just can't bring myself to do that.

I don't think it is that simple, Repug. Why should I have to focus on a career at this point in my life, just because that's what everyone else is doing? How many people do you know who are REALLY doing what they want to do (that you KNOW for sure they do from them teling you, not what you see from the outside) right out of college, on a career path for the next 30 years of their life? I'd be willing to bet not many.

I just got off the phone with my Mom who mentioned that I pretty much have to suck it up and get a "grown up job" whether I like it or not, most likely that I won't, or I keep following what I'm doing and be poor. Obviously she was biased towards the former, mostly because no one in our family has really done that sort of thing. I think it was horrible advice, and I told her I can't just settle down like that for now.....i might HAVE to this year for 3-6 months or so to get on insurance and some medical shit settled up, but after that, I'm pretty sure i'll leave the country and wander around again. Who fucking knows.


Regardless how it seems, and as much advice as I do appreciate and will take, that isn't the main purpose of this thread; it's to see if everyone else our age has shit as figured out as it looks from my end...because as far as I'm concerned, unless i'm making 30k+ right out of college i'm a fucking loser, period.

Very few people have shit figured out, regardless of age. I know people in their mid-30s who've traveled all over the world in their younger youth, but are now panicing because they haven't established any kind of work experience to speak of and are having trouble finding that "career."

yeah but it's so fucked up because I feel like the people who go and get all career crazy and get into the kind of serious relationships that usually coincide with such a mindset, get all panicky later on for not travelling enough.


That being said, next time I travel i'm going to have a somewhat serious job when i do it, or want to at least.

I actually feel pretty well balanced having gained some pretty decent work experience as well as done some traveling. Now though, I'm back in school. When I finish this time I'll just end up going straight to career mode for sure.

So long as you aren't completely miserable, why not just continue what you're doing? Or get an enjoyabl-ish job that is enough to cover what should be minor expenses.

If you find a career, by all means thats the better option, but until then just live modestly and have fun, this is the least amount of responsibility you're gonna have till your 65 or so, no need to rush into something you don't know about, just cut back on expenses and fuck off until you no longer wish to fuck off.

People who start down the "serious" path often get in over their head quick anyway with long term debt like houses and bitches and children, and end off worse than when they worked at the 7-11.

I don't think he's saying that going to grad school and/or getting a career is bad advice in general, repug, but you said it like those are the only two options I have, period, which is exactly the kind of school of thought i'm struggling to break free from, as it's exactly what i'm talking about having a problem with. I must admit i'm kind of surprised to hear it come from you as well. Not ganging up on you or anything, but is that really how you look at it? Idk you just always came off as more of a dreamer to me. And personally, pursuing a career like it's a goddamn piece of ass in my mid-20's just doesn't seem like the way it's supposed to be right now.

Ugly Bastard, I was going to get into that as well... Too many people think they're going to land a high paying job right out of law school, and it's just not that way. You have to go to a good school, graduate high in your class, and be prepared to work 60+ hours per week. If all that happens, you're going to make an ASSLOAD of money. If not, you may end up making 45-50k and paying off 100k in debt.

I'm kind of in the same boat. I'm definitely below poverty wages and rather than using my degrees, I've got something else I'm looking to pursue. Just a few days ago I got a promotion that will give me a set schedule, weekends off, better pay, and the ability to make regular plans outside of work without having to worry about a sudden schedule change. The whole traveling thing is something I haven't done, but would like to. I just can't really afford that with my current lifestyle. But I can always travel later so I'm not too worried about it. But you're not alone, for sure.
